Or some twitter\facebook contest from a beverage distributer giving money to a charity? There’s about one every week it seems. Some new contest where winner takes all for the attention of the masses. As it turns out, I work in the non-profit sector. I move in circles where these type of things come up often.

In the United States there are 200 people for every 1 non-profit. That's about the best I can come up with for the first 2 months of 2010. A year that feels full of potential and hope. It's off to a good start....I'm heading to South Africa on monday the 22nd. It's been incredible to see the and experience the support of so many. It really feels like I'm being sent rather than blazing a trail like a good North American Protestant - essentially belonging to a group of people.
This is a GREAT place to start. Especially since 10,000 Homes is not simply about building houses, but rather about creating HOME - it's about BELONGING for a generation of Africa's children. I'm feeling like i'm going on this pilgrimage from a place of belonging. It's pretty cool...don't you think? Living my values!

I'll do my best to update this regularly and keep you in the loop with picture and videos. I wanted to give you an update on things.

At the end of February, I’ll be heading back to South Africa to reconnect and evaluate with our orphan outreach called Ten Thousand Homes. As the USA point person, I’ve committed to return twice a year to connect and envision what the way forward is with our team.

As a young non-profit comprised of people trusting God as our source, our team has committed to raising the financial resources for these trips. By offsetting these essential costs, we are ensuring that funds designated to feed, clothe, shelter, and provide hope for children in the 3 communities we serve actually get used for their original purpose. That purpose is simple: Creating HOMES for Africa’s orphaned and vulnerable children.

My first trip of the year is Feb. 22nd – Mar. 17th. Currently, tickets are at $1300. I would humbly ask you to consider giving toward this specific need. This amount may seem cumbersome, but I simply ask that you be a part of this in some way. The deadline for purchasing tickets at this price is Feb. 8th.
If you're interested in giving you can do it via Paypal by clicking here. Thank you so much for standing with me in this. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I appreciate your willingness to consider and give. I've recently updated and re organized my blog so it will be easier for you to keep a pulse on how things are progressing. It's certainly been an incredible adventure for me over the last few months. I've been traveling since Oct. 21 until 2 days ago. It started in New Haven and took me to LA, Denver, Orlando, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, back to Connecticut, back to Texas, and finally home to New Haven. It has been an incredible 6 weeks.
All of this traveling has been for Ten Thousand Homes, which is the team I work with that is working to eventually end the Orphan Crisis in Southern Africa. As I've traveled and seen the generous and humbling response of people from various backgrounds, I can't help but get excited. I've loved the seeing "the light turn on" for people in regards to Africa. This is something bigger than I can imagine. It's bigger than a brand, it's bigger than a group of committed believers. This is a MOVEMENT! Ordinary people who think it's possible to end the Orphan Crisis and who think it's not OK that there are an estimated 16 million orphans in sub-saharan Africa. People of Faith and Hope - this is our moment!
I know it sounds impossible, but just imagine if we paid as much attention to Africa as we do to Tiger Woods crashing his car? Would there still be an Orphan Crisis? What if our paradigm changed and we no longer saw Africa as "that place" with "those problem", but as a continent waiting to unleash it's love on the world? We need Africa and it's beauty. I sometimes wonder how history will look upon us in regards to Africa and the Orphan Crisis?
This isn't to say that I don't fight my own enemies of apathy, ignorance, fear, & selfishness. We all do I suppose. The call to the ordinary is louder than ever. The only question that remains is this: Is it worth it? Is God worth it? Is Africa worth it? Faith, Hope, and Love, but the greatest of these is LOVE.

Another world is possible.

With Hope,
David

20 Kilometers = $3000

Dear Friends,
As most of you know, I'm a runner. I love it. It's a bit of sanity for me in a hectic world.
On Monday September 7th (less than a week), I'll be running a half-marathon-that's 20 kilometers-in the New Haven Road Race. I've also decided to make it a chance to raise money for Ten Thousand Homes and help bring HOPE and Homes to Africa's orphan and vulnerable children. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/Sp7GpW54dPI/AAAAAAAAAMs/lKzcy5O0tAs/s320/3297899979_ae60eaca6c_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376953418952242418" />
It's a simple. For ever step I take, it's a chance for US to engage the orphan crisis and make a difference in lives of so many children. If you think you don't have much to give let's look at what $3 can do:

-$3 buys a brick that will help build a home or care center
-$3 is about how much it costs to feed 1 of the 500 kids we serve every week.

Now, imagine what $3000 could do?

You can also sponsor a kilometer for $150. You can give $3 or $3000 - it all counts.
Click here to see far we've come and how far we have to go:

http://apps.facebook.com/causes/fundraising_pledges/83785?m=3b936851

Thanks for giving and making a difference!

With Hope,
David

Update 7/09 - Love is Recession Proof

Dear Friend!
Hope this finds you well and enjoying the summer. Most of you are sweating buckets I’m sure and thanking God for the man who invented air conditioning! I don’t blame you. It truly is a modern marvel!

I know that communication has been slow over the past few months since I’ve been back from my last trip to South Africa. You can have a look at our website www.tenthousandhomes.org or our blog: www.tenthousandhomes.blogspot.com and see what we’ve been up to.

In the midst of economic down turn for so many, it’s good to know that love is recession proof. Orphans still need a place to call HOME. The hungry can still be fed. As we seek to bring home to Africa's orphaned and vulnerable - we are seeing the orphan become much more than simply a forgotten victim, but rather agents of change, full of joy, resilience, and bringing Christ to those around them. Thank you very much for your investment into me, our mission, and seeing HOME come to the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. Love is recession proof.

We couldn't do this without you.

With Love and Gratitude,
David

PS. Here in New England all we have is whispers that there is this season called SPRING! I have hope, that just as every other year, it will arrive.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/Scgo6TP7sII/AAAAAAAAAMc/bYS4bU1LfMI/s320/3368784518_b30b24636a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316544342175494274" />
I’m back from Africa….yet again. Coming and going from Africa has it’s beauty, it’s pilgrimage, and it’s mission, but I have no romantic ideas of what international travel is like. However I was fortunate to have good friend donate an upgrade to me! WOW! What a donation!!! I still have dreams about that seat and it’s comfortable leather, the elbow room, the leg room, the real silverwear, a seat that actually reclined…It’s the little things! For anyone who’s been on a commercial flight, I’m sure this resonates in the deepest part of your soul! (just had to share that!)

Upon arriving in Africa I learned that we had no running water. Ok, fair enough….it’s Africa. People have lived centuries without running water…Come on, I’ve bathed in rivers and buckets. No biggie right?! I can handle this for a few days. 3 and a half weeks later…I had a grand total of about 6 showers. Needless to say, I tried not to smell myself very much. I’m pretty sure I could feel myself ripening.

In spite of the absence of cleanliness, I think I’m coming away with a new perspective <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/Scgn4hJ2R3I/AAAAAAAAAMM/u0K3fbtIqls/s320/3368095205_cacfb5b9e8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316543212036704114" />on what we’re fighting for in Africa. Malachi 4:6 describes the Day of the Lord as “turning the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers”. To me that means that God’s idea of a good time is seeing families restored; seeing the lonely in families; the orphan in a place to belong. I found it incredibly encouraging to know that each time a child arrives at a care center and receives a hot meal, clean clothes and is able to let down their guard- that day becomes the “Day of the Lord”. God has a good day!(It’s probably more like a celebration!) What a cool thing to be a part of?! Giving some of the most vulnerable children on the planet a place to belong. That really is a good day!

Much Love,
David

PS. I also want to say thanks to my friend Aleen Kim from New York, for coming to visit our team in South Africa. It’s always encouraging to have someone spend their time, money, and energy on something you believe in and walk a few miles in your shoes.

Africa Feb. 16

Hola Amigos!

Hello from South Africa…yes, I’m back here again. It’s been a hectic few weeks since the Holidays. Just have a look at my travel schedule on the right and that should pretty much fill you in on things. Now that I’ve made it back to Africa I feel like I can finally hear myself, and God a bit more clearly. I suppose I shouldn’t be that surprised, that so much of the “white noise” disappears. For me, there aren’t nearly as many things to demand my attention – distractions that trick me into thinking that they will actually give me life or restore my soul.

A STORY OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.
In the midst of the hectic schedule, I’ve been really privileged to see God’s faithfulness to me…Particularly with this trip to Africa. Financially it was tight, so I didn’t really feel like it would be wise or that I was to risk putting this trip on a credit card. Then, out of the blue, a friend of Houston, rather unexpectedly, donated almost exactly the amount I needed for the flight! Living life on the edge of God’s great adventure is scary and fulfilling all at the same time. I’m blown away when things like this happen. To be honest, I don’t really have the words. Thank you just doesn’t feel adequate. Especially, in the midst of so much economic struggle across America. The simple fact that someone went against the advice of so many and gave generously and extravagantly is a reflection of God’s heart for His people.

To top things off…my flight from London to Johannesburg was canceled until the following day due to the about 2 inches of snow. (Seriously, 2 inches!) Anyway, a day and half in Heathrow Airport isn’t exactly my idea of a fun time. Fortunately, I’ve got “people”. My good friend Ken from New Haven was flying in from the USA the same time and was being picked up by our close mutual friend, Johnny, who lives in London. So I ended up in a warm home with friends, good food, and a warm bed – Many thanks to Johnny, Lisa, Pete and Gabi!

I’m always amazed how God shows His faithfulness to me…via His people.

Much Love,
David

PS. By the way, London is really beautiful in the snow!

A New Year - Jubilee?

Hello Friends!

Happy New Year! Can you believe we are 3 weeks into 2009?!

Most have us have probably been keeping up with the news and realize that the word “recession” is what is being used to describe our current economic situation. We’ve all seen the “for sale” signs on homes. We all have heard of, or experienced, a recent job loss. And there’s not much talk of an up swing in the near future. I guess this isn’t much reason to look forward to the new year. And we’ve all probably wondered if it will actually be “happy” at all!

In times like these the natural thing to do is simply hunker down and survive. It’s simple dollars & cents preservation. However I keep thinking, what would Jesus do in a recession? Would he just weather the storm or would he be even more radical? Would he give more? Would he share more of his food, his life, his time, his energy? Would he feed more hungry people? Would he heal more sick people? I somehow think Jesus was The Great Revolutionist and would move in the opposite spirit of the times. After all when everybody wanted him to be a military hero and liberate a nation, he instead hung out with little unknown nobody’s – the under belly of Jewish culture – beyond simple prostitutes and cheaters, but also a known terrorist (Simon, the Zealot). The upper crust wasn’t exactly in his entourage. He was just a carpenter. Probably scruffy and bearded (sort of like me at the moment). He didn’t really seem to come off as the guy trying to get his hands on the levers of power.

So it stands to reason, that in a time when the instinct is to fortify our lives and survive this time of perceived lack I would venture to say that Jesus would be even more generous! Over and over thru the story of God and his people, the most opposite solution seemed to win.

So here’s what I propose - my new years resolution of sorts - to be more generous that ever before. And I would love you to hold me to it. Not just with my time or energy, but with everything – yes, even money. We all need to trust God, whether we raise our own finances or we have a steady paycheck.

Yes, it’s scary. But we serve a generous God. So, do we have a deal?

Much Love,
Dave

Hello Friends!

Merry Christmas to you all! Hope this find you well. I've posted my year end letter to sum up how this year has been - and what a year it's been! In addition to our project, Ten Thousand Homes, caring for around 200 orphans in South Africa, we've also launched a new website and put out a new video.

I've posted the video on the blog...it's to the right. Or you can check it out on youtube...HERE

Also, you can check out our new website: www.tenthousandhomes.org. We're still working out some of the kinks, but it's available. We hope you like it.

And one more little whistle on this fancy blog....If you click on the letter below you can see it in a larger format. Gotta love technology sometimes.

THANK YOU!
I really appreciate all you. Each of you has given and contributed in some way. I’m finally arrived back in the States. After about 2 days of travel I finally arrived at JFK at 7 am. Then thru customs, a broken luggage carousel, 2 buses, a train and finally home. It’s always a bit difficult to articulate how things “go” in while I’m over so I thought you might be able to read this story that Brittany, who’s one of our staff. I hope this helps a bit. It’s below.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/SRnAbAx8c4I/AAAAAAAAAHs/sSXZwmLKSe0/s320/IMG_0987.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267452809484989314" />
As always please know how grateful I am to have all of you behind me supporting, giving, encouraging & praying. Thank you.

Your Friend,
Dave

Here the story. Please have a read:

Sweetness
Her name is Sweetness. She is barely three years old and already her eyes reflect the harsh reality that is her life. Orphaned as an infant, Sweetness had been passed around from relative to relative before landing on the doorstep of a widowed uncle. Out of necessity, he is gone most of the day at work, leaving the three year old behind to fend for herself. Infected with AIDS, his death will follow swiftly on the heels of her parents and Sweetness will soon be orphaned for the second time.
When I first started work in Kabokweni, Sweetness was shy and would not approach me willingly. She is too solemn for one so small and often stares at her feet rather than respond when I try to talk to her. Sometimes I pick her up whether she acknowledges me or not and hold her close. She doesn’t fight, but lays passive in my arms and keeps her head down. I feel the hard, roundness of her stomach. She looks like a pregnant toddler, but I know that this is often caused by malnutrition.
Yesterday, I was playing a game with about fifty of the kids. They were being loud and acting more rambunctious than normal, but still for the most part good-natured. There was a lot of noise, that amazing crescendo unique to children and, while I was laughing and yelling along with the rest of them, organizing a game was fast becoming impossible. And in that moment of chaos, I felt tiny arms encircle my leg and a small body pressed itself close to me. This alone was not unusual, but as I glanced down and saw Sweetness, her cheek resting on my thigh her eyes raised to me, I felt near tears. She stayed glued to me the rest of the day and I let her cling all she wanted. Or maybe it was she who let me cling.

Week 3 in Africa

Hi Friends,

It's about a week now before I head back to the States. It’s been a an interesting 2 weeks. The first week was a YWAM conference with over 200 workers from all over southern Africa. It was great to see a broad range of diversity from around the world as well as from all over Africa. I’m always blown away when I see the diversity of God displayed in His Creation and see the unity that comes to belonging to family of God regardless of color, culture, nationality, or economic status. It’s a beautiful thing!

My time so far as also been a bit surreal. During my first week here I learned that my grandfather, Ambrosio Bosquez, passed away in Piedras Negras, Mexico. It was a bit tough to be away from my family for the time of grieving and remembering him together as a family. Fortunately my mom and dad were able to be there to represent my brother and I, since we’re both overseas at the moment. My brother and I were fortunate enough to see him together last May, I think I knew in my heart that would be my good bye to him. I’m sure he’s enjoying his new home.

Being in Africa always seems to put me back in touch with how fragile life is, thus making it that much more precious and making me realize how valuable people are, whether I recognize their value or not. I get that feeling of fragility with news about my grandfather, but also when I’m about 10 feet from an elephant that was tearing apart a tree. (yes, that did happen about 3 days ago).

Thanks again for your prayers, friendship, and love. Which is just funny to say really.

Inevitably the week before the flight is always some form of craziness. It’s come to be expected. Some of my own fault, some not so much. Everything from speeding tickets to broken down airplanes to figuring out how to pack all the stuff that people send to the crew over in South Africa. It’s weeks like this that make me wish I could have a personal assistant for about a week. Not to mention the Hurricane that swept thru Houston, that has affected many of you. Including my parents who haven't had power for about 10 days now. Yikes! For those of you in Houston know that you're in my prayers.

All that to say I’m looking forward to going over. It always seems to be about both a mission and a pilgrimage. Part bringing the Kingdom of God to the planet, part bringing the Kingdom of God to my heart. Honestly I wouldn’t want it any other way. All the best things seem to be a mixture of sacrifice and joy. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why I love Africa so much. It’s full of incredibly painful stories yet bursting at the seems with hope! I always tell people that Africa wrecks you in the best possible way.

Many thanks to all of you who give and who pray and just give a rip about what I’m up to and who I get to work with. I really couldn’t do without you guys. THANKS!!!!!

I’ll be touch. My next blog will be from the other side of the world. I’m flying on a dodgy airline so I’m looking forward to how much duct tape I manage to find on the plane.

Much Love,
Dave

a promised blog and an experiment

Hello Friends!

Me again. As promised here’s another blog entry! It’s more of an announcement really. I’m heading back to South Africa, but you probably already knew that. If you didn’t know it was just a matter of time. Yes, it’s my home away from home. A place and people that I love. Most of you know what I’m about so I won’t go into that and what I’ll be doing there. If you want to know more just go to www.tenthousandhomes.org. The dates of the trip are on the right just so you know. I’ll also be putting up another blog just before I go.

So, I’ll share the backdrop of my heart as I’m preparing for this trip…Jesus once told the story about a Samaritan and Jew. The Jewish man was passed by his countrymen and clergy (or a pastor) essentially his physical neighbors. Then along comes a Samaritan man. Neither of them live in the same country, share interests, water sources, food, or even religions really. They have NOTHING in common. Each was even traditionally hated by the other. Yet, I think it’s a bit like God to use this story to redefine who our neighbor is. After all the 2 greatest commandments are 1.) Love God with everything that is in you and 2.) Love your neighbor as yourself. Hmm. Nice one God!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of “who is my neighbor?” and story telling and how I could pull off melting them together. So for this trip I’ll be doing a bit of interviewing with people who are willing to share their story as well as tell my own with a couple of video blogs, which I’ll try to upload while I’m in Africa. It’s a bit of an experiment, but it’ll be a fun process I hope.

Much love to you all! I’m still incredibly grateful to all of you guys for your faithful friendship, constant support, and just downright caring. Thanks!!!!

Your Friend,
Dave

PS. If any of you are interested in giving toward this trip please send checks to the address at the side. Also, you can try the donate button, but those gifts will not be tax deductible.
I'm back!...at least on my blog

Hello Friends!
First off let me start by apologizing for the lack of communication on my part. It’s been a low key summer for me, which has come at a great time. After almost a full year of travel, it has been a season of a slower pace of life. Unfortunately it has spilled over into correspondence and updating. I hope all of you know, how grateful I am that you’re behind me in this. Thank you!

So for now, I’d love to leave that for now. I’ll update all you soon with my plan to head back to South Africa next month.

Much love to you all! Sorry this is so late getting to everyone. I’ve been wondering what to write and or if to write anything at all, but here are some things that I’ve been stewing on for a bit.

Recently I’ve been reminded of Mother Teresa’s words, “I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish that He didn’t trust me so much.” Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has thought the very same thing.

Look at the news: Myanmar, China, Africa, the US economy, hardships of friends or our own, high fuel prices (all things I wish I could change). Everyone seems to feel the fear creepying in and control slipping out of our grip. Fear and discouragement seem to be rearing their ugly heads – attempting to destroy any glimmer of hope or the notion of speaking good things to those who need to hear them. These two very things pose the biggest obstacles to the significant contribution each of us have to make on the world, on our neighbours & friends, or on our city. Just the same it can cause us to put up defences that hide our true self and who we were created to be. In contrast it is easy to hope when things are going well and we are in control, but hope when times are good may not be hope at all, but rather uninformed optimism – kind of like teenagers who are in love.

The two biggest motivations in my life are fear and love. Which one will rule me? I have seen incredible tragedy in our work in Africa. Ironically, it seems to apply to people all over the world, across economic, social, and cultural strata. I have seen both in multiple cultures - give less, don’t risk, ignore the forgotten, harbor unforgiveness, go to where the grass is greener, retreat into our false interior castle, keep up appearances, etc, etc….fill in your own words. <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D1b7cfaf2f6b3c84c%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331629483%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6A058A1E96EEB7BD8FC294068F8B426666EE8FE.40EFA7886CD3904FA08E782D43035590526C7D4E%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D1b7cfaf2f6b3c84c%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DWa9OchsPOF08Ccm7M4q_Dubve80&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

I want to share some reason to hope. Let me tell you about my friends in America who give so generously while they themselves are in need, or the 18 years old orphan I met in South Africa who forgave the man who murdered her mother. Or the 7 Christians serving orphans in a Muslim state-run orphanage for the past 10 years. Or my friends Keith and Katherine who invite refugees over for dinner. Or my friend Stuart who’s riding an hour on his bike to and from work to raise money for orphans in Africa. Or the people in Zambia who help their neighbors simply because they have the strength to get out of bed. All of these motivated by love and not by self preservation and fear.

We all need reason to hope and to be encouraged. Jesus gives us reason to hope: “In this world you will have trials, but fear not, I have overcome the world.” Or how about the time He takes a child’s loaves and fishes and feeds a few thousand people and the time he makes water into wine. Turning nothing into something. Take lack and making plenty. Building a His Church for the first 250 years with broken lepers, prostitutes, beggars, and down right nobodies.

I’ll leave you with this: another Mother Teresa quote. “I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” ( FYI: people who deal with justice issues tend to quote her a lot) When times are hard don’t survive, but rather love. Hope is always preceded by love.

Your Friend,

Dave

PS. Have a look at the video. I know not everyone maybe comfortable with some of the wording, but I haven't found such a hopeful outlook from someone like Mr. Benn in quite sometime. Special thanks to Chris Mitchell in the UK for this.

Back Home

Hi Friends,

Hope this finds you well. Sorry this is so late getting to everyone. It’s been a little hectic since I’ve been back.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R_Ge-LfHKoI/AAAAAAAAAGM/wdv0XFCEyD4/s320/PICT0434_2_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184099437152512642" />
It’s just been just under 2 weeks since arriving back in the States. The last week in South Africa was incredibly busy. Two days of doing AIDS testing in a school, an overnight stay serving in a hospice, friends visiting from the States, and plenty of meetings…as well as finding creative ways to keep bats out of my room…yes, bats! Not as easy as you’d might think!

Since being back I find myself reflecting a lot about that last week in South Africa. Between the AIDS testing and the hospice I’ve been thinking about the fragility of life. (Couple that with the Easter Season.) Africa remains one of those kinesthic places. For me, the veil between heaven and earth is very thin there. I’m not near as aware of how fragile my life is, or how fragile the lives of those around are.

I couldn’t help but think about the patient in the hospice the last few days. Helping him go the toilet, take a shower, swallow his medication, and even move from his bed to a wheel chair, I thought, “This guy is my age and his life is nearly finished. It shouldn’t be this way”. Talk about a reality check. That sort of thing makes one grateful for the life that one has.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R_GfL7fHKpI/AAAAAAAAAGU/UhqRSPrWY8k/s320/HPIM2547_2_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184099673375713938" />

Lastly, I just want to say thanks to all of you for believing in me and praying for me during yet another month in Africa. That sort of thing isn’t measurable, but so essential. And I’m grateful to those of you who gave so generously. It’s incredible humbling and means the world that you’d trust me in that way.

Bless you guys! My apologies for the late-ness of a real blog. Africa and the internet are 2 words that don’t go well together. While most of you are weary of winter, summer is in full swing here in sunny South Africa – yep, it’s hot!

To start things off I spent my first night (Valentines Day) in a hotel room by the airport in Johannesburg waiting to catch my connection to White River. Fun times!....Uh,not really…but enough complaining.

I’m glad to be back in Africa! It’s always an incredible privilege to be here and be a part of God’s interaction with this continent. I have a lot of expectation & a sense of responsibility in my heart in regard to what we're doing here. There seems to be good feeling of momentum coming into this next season as a group of friends trying to follow God. (Albeit, we’re friends who have their names together on legal documents.)

The other day I had the privilege of visiting a home for children found abandoned or left at hospitals. (you read that right) It seems unthinkable! Calling it a horrible scenario would be an understatement.
When I walked thru the door it didn’t think there would be enough to do. Things looked pretty well sorted actually. (There’s my “get-it-done” attitude). As we played, changed diapers, served lunch, and made make-shift top hats I realized how important this was.
Most people think, “What difference will holding a baby for a few hours make?” But when you’ve literally been found in a trash bag on the side of a mountain then it makes all the difference in the world. Perspective changes everything.

The more time I spend on this continent the more I feel that we are onto something bigger than I can really comprehend. The only thing I can come up with is nation building. A continent with 38 million orphans is like starting all over again. Unless you’ve been here, it’s hard to really understand this part. (That’s your invitation to come visit).

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for all of your incredible generosity and friendship. You guys keep me “in the game”. I hope you know I wouldn’t want to do this without all you routing for me.

Your Friend,
Dave

(Sorry, No pictures this time. I just wanted to pass on a little update! I mentioned in my last update that there where plans to head back to Africa. Well, here they are! Thanks for having a look at my blog!
On Feb. 13 I'll be heading to South Africa and Mozambique to continue our work with Ten Thousand Homes. We are still pioneering quite a lot of initiatives such as plans for clean water, nutrition, and various education programs.
We'll also head to Mozambique to meet with a couple in Maputo to see about putting up a new care center that will help provide for orphans living on the streets.
I'm still currently in the process of raising the funds. If you are interested in being involved either by praying or giving, please the click on the large photo below to read more specifics.
Thank you so much for your willing to consider and pray.

It’s priceless.

Your Friend,
Dave

Home

Hi Friends,
Happy Belated New Year to all of you. Hope that your holidays were full of good food, good friends, and good time with family. Have you happened to make any New Years Resolutions yet?

Anyway…Home.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R4mi44pzdYI/AAAAAAAAAFs/y9w89UbcmNM/s320/2005_0815_093208AA.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154830346666341762" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R4mjh4pzdaI/AAAAAAAAAF8/mbnK9k0bE_0/s320/fatherson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154831051040978338" />I’ve been thinking a lot about home lately. What it is? Where it is, and what makes a home? I think about it a lot because my lifestyle and the nature of what we do in Africa in regards to the orphan and the widow. And I’m finding that most people are either trying to get back home or find a new one.

Thinking about this makes our name, “Ten Thousand Homes”, so much more meaningful for me. A home is a place to belong, more than simply a place to live and redefines what it means to be an orphan (not just losing your parents). Africa’s orphans need home. Not just 4 walls and a roof, but a place to belong. A place to be loved, to be safe, and to inherit more than they thought possible. Orphans are often just surviving, often afraid to dream or risk because of what it will cost to do so. This was never more evident than when I stayed with the orphan headed household in August. It seems the more and more people I meet, the more I realize how much the role of home plays in all our lives - our sense of belonging.

Several years back I was in Ireland I saw a little piece of graffiti. I had to <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R4mieYpzdXI/AAAAAAAAAFk/4F9-9ZDmyLI/s320/100_2266.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154829891399808370" />photograph it. And it has always stayed with me. “Home is not where you live, but where they understand you.” Home gives us a place to belong. It is a huge part of every person’s identity and makes all the difference in how our lives impact the world, the poor, & the needy.

How do our lives create home for others?

Your Friend,
Dave Henry

Thankful

It’s the Holidays and Thanksgiving has just past. Which, traditionally, is a time to reflect on things that matter…things like family, friends, values, way we live our lives and start thinking about New Years resolutions. Often it is a time to give thanks as well.

We hear the Psalms speaking about “entering His courts with praise & thanksgiving…” and “giving thanks for His everlasting kindness”. Just the same - Paul’s command to the church to simply “be thankful”. It also seems to be a mark that Jesus looked for. (i.e. the ten lepers). Gratefulness is an appropriate & fitting response to what has been given to us, whether deemed miraculous or not. I sometimes think I would be more grateful if I saw more spectacular “signs” from the Divine. A bit foolish on my part. However, if I’m not grateful for the ordinary things of life, like clean water, friends, safety, a warm bed, a mom, a dad, a brother, food, tough times, good times, my 96 Saturn (which occasionally makes me curse), some rather remarkable friends & supporters, my handicapped friend John (who is one of the most forgiving people I have ever met), and living with in a place where people “get” me. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/R2ChKoFS2OI/AAAAAAAAAFU/3bAqGdoJSC8/s400/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143287978387495138" />

Gratitude seems to mean something to God. He looks for grateful hearts. A grateful heart produces a humility and authenticity in us that becomes a beautiful aroma synonymous with God’s Kingdom existing not only in our hearts, but also in the planet. Taking time to be thankful blesses God’s heart, brings us perspective, makes us give generously, and pushes us to make an intentional effort serve the poor & needy as a lifestyle. (not make build bigger programs)

Our selfish hearts & society, tell us that more is better. Better houses, cars, occupations, ministries, just insert your own object here. Bigger, better, faster, and economic growth ar the magic words. Yet, the Cross of Christ calls us to simplicity, gratefulness, and love. Jesus started out in things like a stable and a feeding trough, doesn’t get much simpler than that! But that is precisely what makes him Emmanuel. He walked among us!

So as we go thru the season, let’s remember Emmanuel and live grateful lives, in light of that fact that He is with us.

Much Love,
Dave

What a guy like me writes about on Halloween...

Hi Friends,

Sorry I haven’t updated you guys in a while. It’s been a real adjustment being back this side. I don’t think I’ll be shaking off my 3 months in Africa any time soon. Africa is one of those kinesthetic places. It must touched, felt, and experienced. In other words…yes I’m going back. Most of you probably already knew that, but just in case. I’ll head back in February for another stay. You’re always welcome for a visit!

So what am I doing in the mean time you ask? Well, I just came back from spending a week in Minnesota and Wisconsin, speaking and sharing on behalf of Ten Thousand Homes. I have the privilege of spending a good amount of time sharing about Ten Thousand Homes and what God is doing in Africa, His heart for the orphan, and His desire to see the Church engage the largest pandemic the world has ever seen. Just in case you were wondering, there are 13 million orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa right now! 15 million by 2010. I wonder what grief God must feel when He sees such suffering?
I wonder many times, “how in the world will we reach these orphans?” The need is incredible! Overwhelming! But then I think of this sweeping pandemic and then I think of how much love God possesses. He isn’t short on love, only short on the people who are willing to give it away.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RykbkN2nvPI/AAAAAAAAAFM/WFD7axrwwzE/s400/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127659959746018546" />When I read Scripture I see 2 laws - as Jesus put it: Love God, Love your neighbour. In the story of the Good Samaritan (Lk. 10:25-37), Jesus redefines who our neighbour is. You know the story. A complete stranger cares for another. Two people who are complete strangers, have seemingly nothing in common, and are typically avoided by each other – even hated (for those who’re familiar with the history of the figures Jesus uses). I know Africa seems so far away, maybe all we know is what we see in the news or on tv. But Africa is a real place, with real people, who really hurt! Well, you get the point, right?
Jesus has a great way of ending stories...“Go and do likewise.” Love your neighbour as yourself.

Personally, I’m compelled – would go so far as mandated - to respond the orphan crisis. Not only because it’s the right thing to do (which it is), not only because I must back my claim to be someone who values what God values (like the 2100 times the poor are mentioned in the Bible), but rather because of the deep, intrinsic value of God’s people and His inexhaustible, baffling, even reckless love! To quote Jeremy, “God is looking for the slightest excuse to be a father to the fatherless.”

Your Friend,
Dave Henry

Home For Now

Hi Friends,
Well I’m home now. Just a few days ago, a plane landed at JFK and I was on it. It’s definitely a mix of emotions. New Haven and South Africa have a special place in my heart. Being in Africa has really made America feel like more of an idea than a place. As stark as the difference may feel, I have to remind myself of how similar the two are. Both filled with people who want to belong, be fathered, and have hope for tomorrow.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RwUKUu1jSUI/AAAAAAAAAFE/naXk2nYun3U/s320/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117507902862739778" />UPDATE:
For now I wanted to update all of you on how things are with “Z”. For those of you who might remember, I stayed with her and her brother for a few days. (Please refer to August blog.) They are orphans who live in Masoyi on their own. No parents, no real safety, very little to call their own.
As of last week, we were able to purchase land for them to have their own home. Their current living situation has put them in a vulnerable situation and they are easily taken advantage of – mostly for the little money they have. This has happened more than once.
Here’s a picture of the land that will very soon have “Z’s” home on it. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RwUJ0u1jSTI/AAAAAAAAAE8/6DCk_sgBr1M/s320/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5117507353106925874" />It doesn’t look like much now, but soon it will be a safe place for “Z” and her daughter and younger brother.
Z is just one of many. Our dream is make sure that many more just like her are recipients of hope, Christ, as well as a home. I will keep you updated on how things are going for “Z”, her daughter, and her younger brother.

I leave Africa with the assurance that this is just the beginning of something very profound. Africa is a significant piece of the dream in my heart. As my friend Ken said to me once, “Living your dream isn’t easy.” Being part of pioneering something in Africa on behalf of the orphan and widow is a profound privilege. My time in Africa has been challenging and fulfilling all at once.

So for now, I head to America with the mission of telling “their story”. Plans are already in the works to head back in February, perhaps even sooner. Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Please feel free to call or email. I’d love to grab coffee or a meal.

Your Friend,
Dave Henry

Almost There

Hi Friends,
In just a few days I’ll be leaving South Africa for the States via England to visit good friends. As I’ve reflected on my time, there are plenty of triumphs, tragedies, joys, and sadness. I could paint a rosy picture of how my time here has been one huge joy ride, but the truthfully it is both joy and pain. Let’s not pretend, shall we?

SOME THOUGHTS:
Something that has really been apparent to me has been the necessity for beauty here. Granted I know that there is a certain amount of beauty in every situation, for those who choose to find it. However in a place where survival is the name of the game, beauty often gets pushed right out of the way. The appreciation of beauty is a sign that we are no longer just surviving, but truly living, in the fullest sense. I heard someone say, “ The job of art is to chase away ugliness.” Not just aesthetic ugliness or the reality of life, but the ugliness of just surviving and living for the tyranny of the immediate. Beauty reminds us that there is something more, “a deeper magic”, and that there is a God who is meticulously involved, pursuing, seeking.

Take time today to find God in the most unlikely place or person. Ask Him to make you aware. Ask Him to remind you of what is good and beautiful in the world.

Your Friend,
Dave Henry

One

Hi Friends,
Just wanted to update you guys on how things are here. It’s hard to imagine but I’ll be back in the States in about a month. It’s kind of surreal how the time has passed here in Africa. It’s flies by because there is so much to do, but at the same time seems to creep along…sort of like watching the grass grow. That’s Africa I suppose.

HERE’S A STORY:
(Sorry no pictures…for lots of reasons…but please keep reading)
Let me tell you about Roger (not his real name). I met Roger while doing home visits. These home visits are a foundational piece to what we do here. It is the most valuable and effective way that we can connect personally with the people of Masoyi. We hear their stories and respond in the best way we can. Whether it’s just a friend to listen or giving medical or food or giving whatever we can. In this case, a nursing team had already come to visit Roger’s wife who is battling severe TB. Even their newborn baby is very ill. Roger spends most of his day providing for his sick family, as well as caring for them in their illness. He is an incredible example to me. Especially in light of all the tragic stories of men who don’t act responsibly toward their families.
When we visited we notice that there was no food to go with the TB meds that nursing team had brought. In fact, there hasn’t been much food for the past 3 months. It has been very lean times for many people in Masoyi. (The grant we just received doesn’t arrive until October) This situation was looking grim for both mother and child. No food and plenty of sickness to go around. Being in Africa always reminds me how fragile life is.

A local volunteer, also named David, and I decided we needed to act right away. So off to the local shop to buy food. You should have seen the smile on Roger’s face when we returned – food in hand. It was bright and it was ear to ear! Granted there are several thousand more in Masoyi with the same problems, some much worse. This time it felt good to actually to do something for this one man and his family. Sometimes it just doing the good you ought to do for one person that makes all the difference.

Much Love,
Dave Henry

A Funny Story

Hello Again Friends,
I forgot to mention a story from my time in Masoyi. I don't know how I forgot to tell you, but I did. My bad guys.
So on the last night of my time in Masoyi, our very drunk neighbor decided to pay a visit...and he brought a friend, actually his daughter. I thought "okay, maybe it's an african thing to bring your daughter to meet the foreigner who's staying next door." Well, it is if you want the foreigner next door to marry your daughter. He proceeded in drunken english/suswahti to inform me that his daughter would give me many children. And his daughter was right there! (that wasn't awkward at all) Although he made several good cases, I really thought it would be best to decline. Besides, I didn't have the 30 chickens and goats he was asking for. To be quite honest, I'm just a bit surprised by all this. I wasn't exactly looking my dashing self. Full beard and no shower for about 4 days and I just returned from working on a building site for a new care center. Not exactly looking my devastatingly handsome self.

Awkward Africa moment #372: turning down the neighbor's daughter.

Awkward Africa moment #373 sure to come soon.

Much Love,
Dave

A Week in Masoyi

Hi Friends,
Last week I spent the a few nights staying with an orphan headed household. I can’t give their names, but let’s call them S and A. S has a 4 year old daughter, L, who is stocked full of vibrant giggles! L is 20, raising her 4 year old daughter, going to school, and raising her younger brother. Things I have not much of a grasp on. Admittedly I wasn’t sure what to expect. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/Rsmdwy9eJ_I/AAAAAAAAAEM/YIGnpdcnX34/s200/100_0210_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100781514612680690" />So I decided a good start would be to have a heart willing to learn from the differences and embrace the moment. Strangely enough, I was blinded sided by the similarities, not of our social status but by our hearts. Granted I have no idea what it means to grow up without parents, nor to raise a younger sibling and a daughter, provide for them, or get them to school on time. I was rather struck by the common bond of relationship. More than anything, my new friends just wanted to be understood and have a sense of belonging…not so different from myself or perhaps even you. More than wanting to be “helped”, S and A wanted to be understood, to know someone was in their corner. I guess I’m that person now.
As I walked thru the community, I could feel the stares. Particularly because I was one of the few “whites” who had ever really stayed in the community. There wasn’t an American for miles around…literally. Word travelled fast thru the neighbourhood. Plenty of people stopped in to say hi. Which is great, until you try to remember everyone names…slightly embarrassing. My “fish-out-of-water” syndrome was most evident when I went to fetch water at the bottom of the hill. We loaded up the wheelbarrow and headed down the hill. When we got to the well, <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/Rsme1S9eKBI/AAAAAAAAAEc/oomYZoend-8/s320/100_0216_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100782691433719826" />I could feel the eyes of all the people around bearing down on me. In South Africa, it’s completely strange to see “whites” carry water, much less a foreigner such as myself. Next came the trip to the house, complete with a wheelbarrow full of water jugs - slightly more difficult, to say it politely. But this is a near daily routine for S and A.
To be quite frank with you, S and A are my hero’s. They are examples for this community and the hope that is coming here. At the same time the reflection of the crisis at hand. It is devastating and full of hope all at the same time. I find myself scratching my head at the things I see and the stories I hear.

On Another Note:
In one of my previous blog’s about a grant proposal to USAID and the twenty-four hours we had to turn it in. Well, my nerdy-ness paid off and with a “little” help from the Lord. We got the grant! This was so crucial and now starting in October the funds will be released to us: so that we can continue to feed and resource the 9000 orphans in Masoyi! This is a big deal! It’s somewhere in the neighbourhood of a million USD! This is huge! Thank you for praying. It really means more than you know.

Much Love,
Dave Henry

A Big Week!

Hi Friends,
Today I'm heading into the Masoyi community to live with an orphan headed household until Thursday. For those of you wondering what that is, it's a family that is headed up by an orphan, usually under the age of 18. This orphan cares for his younger siblings just as a parent would. If can imagine being 16 or 17 and raising your younger brothers and sisters, providing food, money for school & supplies, keeping them out of trouble. Providing everything that a parent normally would.
I'm basically going to live like them in every way. Be a part of their lives. It's a really a small thing, all things considered, but I'm excited by this time of learning and experiencing life with these precious ones.
I know that I stand to learn more than I care to. But it is the stark reality here in Masoyi and most of Southern Africa.

All this to say, expect a blog post about this week in the near future. I'm expecting to get rocked, so that means you'll be reading and eyeful this time next week.
Thanks again friend! I really appreciate you!

Much Love,
Dave

PS. I also added some links to friends of mine who I have the privilege of working with at some level. They're ace's in my book!

PSS. One more thing. A few of us who've been working here are going on the road this fall. If you're interested in having us come thur your church or community please feel free to email and we can chat about it! Hopefully we'll be seeing you soon!

Way Out Of My League!

Hi Friends,
Here we are…3 and a half weeks into OUR African adventure….(yes, you are a part of this too). It has been quite the ride. There are plenty of moments of holding on for dear life! Sometimes for fear of the treacherous roads, enormous spiders, and creepy animal noise at night. Sometimes it’s because of the stories I hear and see day to day. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RrMgYn-AmqI/AAAAAAAAADs/EGuI7B4MPuc/s400/100_0124_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094451210904181410" />
This trip is certainly different than all the rest. Africa, the orphan, and widow aren’t just a phase for me, but something I have to live in light of. Especially, since I claim to follow Christ. And now my journey with Him has led me to this place.
Last week, one of the directors of the ministry here asked me and my friend, Dave Song, to put together a quarterly report to turn in to one of our major donors for our projects here – the US government. Usually, this isn’t a big deal. Just one catch this time…we had less than 24 hours to build it, essentially from square one. So we jumped into super human work mode.
To make a long story short, this report would essentially secure about a million US dollars to feed and resource (school fees & supplies, social services, medical care, blankets, mattress’s) around 9000 orphans for 3 months. No pressure, right? I’m not going to lie…I was sweating bullets! In short, we were able to get the funding and our little crisis was averted. (Your prayers being a significant part.)<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RrMf3X-AmpI/AAAAAAAAADk/7-rvti8HLic/s320/KN009017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094450639673531026" />
That being said, I kept looking at all those names on the spreadsheets. At moments they seemed countless. Each one has a unique story, some of triumph and some of tragedy. Unfortunately, most have seen their fair share of heartache. All of them orphans for whatever reason, due to HIV/AIDS or some other tragedy. Some of them heading up households, others living with a relative, some all alone. Yet, God dreams who and what each one could become. They are priceless treasures of God’s heart – the displaced, unknown royalty of His Kingdom.

I feel very compelled to repeatedly thank all of you for believing in me and this mission. I have felt your prayers and your friendship – even between the huge geographical distance. I really couldn’t do this without all of you. Much love to you all.

Your Friend,
Dave

PS. Sorry for the run-on sentences. A friend pointed out and declared me “King of the Run–on”. I’m working on it.

I Made It!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RpNDdDvUHFI/AAAAAAAAADM/du82JjbJkjY/s320/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085482570730445906" />
Hi Friends,
I made it! It’s great to be back in Africa. It’s currently winter here…winter being a relative term. (Lots of sunshine and about 65 in the day, 40 at night). Here are some photos of where I live and my journey over. It over looks the valley that is home to the Masoyi community. We’re about 10 kilometres from the nearest paved road at the top of a hill. Our electricity went out the other day for about 12 hours. When I asked why, everyone responded, “Welcome to Africa!” Yet, somehow the inconveniences add to my over all love for this place. It reminds me of what I do and don’t necessarily need.
I saw a bunch of guys from the village today. It's such a privilege for me to be remembered by them. It's probably the most rewarding part for me...among other things. When the poor remember your name, it says something about what they see in me and it’s humbling. These guys have seen several short-term people come thru, but when they feel a sense of home with around me it means a lot. Obviously it is the relational investment that is the most important thing. I love being here, but it’s the people who make it what it is.
Thanks for reading. I really appreciate all your prayers and friendship. It means a lot. Lots of love to all of you. Keep in touch if you can. I’d love to know how you are and how I can be praying for you.

Your Friend,
Dave

One Week

Dear Family & Friends,

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN
Just a week now before I fly for South Africa. HERE WE GO!!!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RpNGOjvUHGI/AAAAAAAAADU/6Sl9J1xZ0YI/s320/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085485620157226082" />I have to admit the pace of my heart has quickened as the time has gotten closer. This feels like a significant intersection for me. I often think of it in terms of my bungee jumping experience. The scariest part is just before you jump, after that it becomes an experience you never forget. It's funny that I think of myself as taking such a big risk, yet I forget there is One is who risks even greater, both with me and on me. This is really humbling and gives me greater courage to jump into the unknown. It is His perfect love that displaces my fear.
These past 2 weeks have been incredibly busy, between packing, planning, moving my things into my friend Noah's basement, running errands, buying things like shampoo, soap, and tooth paste. All adding to the quick pace of my heart. Along with the wide range of emotions that come along with packing your life into a couple of boxes and a suit case and saying bye to friends.
Since I'll be in South Africa for 3 months every moment of every day is not necessarily scheduled. There are some "unknowns". But the instead of fearing the unknowns, I must allow God the freedom to fill those places with Himself and not my fear. The "unknowns" are an opportunity. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RoWbTzvUHEI/AAAAAAAAADE/sps0zld6CWw/s200/Zambian+Hands.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5081638519165951042" />This is more than a mission. It is a pilgrimage, and I must take intentional steps to see that. This isn't just a short term mission trip for me. It is a life investment. Africa has my heart and if something has your heart it has everything else. God is worth it and the royal people of Africa are worth it.

NOW SOME DETAILS: (please don't stop reading)
I will do my best to post blogs while I'm there. Email is spotty at best, so please be patient. I plan on posting everything from the flight there to food to projects. My heart is to eliminate as much disconnect as possible, especially for those of you who are curious as to what Africa is like. So be on the look out! And if you're curious about anything please let me know I'd be glad to post something on it. Please no requests for up close photos of lions or their teeth, as I will probably end up in their bellies.
Also, I'll be will be passing on a new American number to all of you, if you'd like to give me a call. It will ring to my South African phone without international charges. I'll also pass on my South African number if it's easier for you. Just remember I'm 7 hours ahead of the East Coast Time.
One last thing...if any of you are interested in contributing financially to me please send your checks to: YWAM Tyler, Attn: Accounting P.O Box 3000, Garden Valley, TX, 75771 USA. Just put a note in the envelope with my name on it. MY NAME CANNOT APPEAR ON THE CHECK AT ALL.
If you'd like to give to Ten Thousand Homes and our projects, please contact me directly.

THANK YOU:
I say it over and over, but THANK YOU! It means the world to me how much all of you have contributed to me and this mission. I could not and would not do this without all of you. Some of you have given finances, cameras(Dave & Karen), your pledges to pray, some all of the above, but most of all you've given me your friendship and that is priceless. Thanks for believing in me.

Your Friend,
Dave

Another Adventure

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RmRi2xVax9I/AAAAAAAAAB8/hMpNxV7gryU/s320/KN007022_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5072287773421651922" />
HELLO FRIENDS!!
We've survived another winter here in New England. Lots of cold and lots of snow... enough said. Sunshine and green grass are a very refreshing sight! Yes, that means spring for us. And with spring comes change. This includes yours truly.

BACK TO AFRICA
As of July 6, I will be heading back to South Africa for 3 months to continue working with our project - Ten Thousand Homes. My time there will be spent helping to shape and define the future of our mission there. I will also be spending a significant amount of time developing our network of relationships with our partners on the ground, as we look at the possibility of expanding and partnering into other African nations like Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. Of course, I will continue to be a part of building homes and care centers for needy families and communities - specifically for those directly effected by HIV/AIDS.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RmRf8BVax8I/AAAAAAAAAB0/NJwY2xzVwn0/s400/Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5072284565081081794" />
This is just a continuation of the journey God has moved me towards in regard to the orphan and the widow, especially in the context of Africa. There are moments when the peace and confidence escape me, but I have come to the conclusion that peace and confidence are not criteria for guidance. The orphan and the widow is where God seems to be moving, so rather than invent my own "mission", I'd rather be found where God is already moving. Make no mistake, God is on the move among the orphan and widow. In the words of Mother Theresa, "We find Christ in the distressing disguise of the poor."

THEN WHAT?
Upon my return in late September, I will be going on the road sharing about Ten Thousand Homes in churches, universities, and various other groups about what God is dreaming for Africa. Our prayer is that we will help to remove the disconnect between what is seen and what is done for Africa. Just the same we hope to be a significant doorway thru which people may have a meaningful effect on the lives of the children of Africa. If you are interested in having myself or one of our team members come and share about Ten Thousand Homes, please contact me.

PLANE TICKET
I am still raising the funds for the plane ticket. If you are interested in giving toward this, please contact me. The total airfare is $2000 and all gifts are tax deductible.

THANK YOU:
I just want to tell each of you how much I appreciate your friendship, support, and prayers. Without a doubt, I could not do this you - nor would I want to. Thank you for believing in me, this mission, and the dream of God for Africa - giving a place for people to belong.

Your Friend,
Dave Henry

Fear & Loving in New Haven

I'm in Montreal, Canada at the moment. So I thought I'd write about the place I live- New Haven. (I'll write more about my experience here later.) Since the first of the year, I’ve had a phrase repeat over and over in my head, “Belief equals action.” What we DO is really what we BELIEVE. Living in New Haven, the gap between the belief and action is certainly evident. Connecticut has the highest per capita income in the US, yet spends more on social services per capita than most nations.

I have been quite convicted about my role in the city I call home. This past Fall I started volunteering at a soup kitchen, distributing free clothes in a needy neighborhood, as well as visiting my new friend John Kennedy (yes, that really is his name). He’s suffers from minor seizures, learning disabilities, and probably a good deal of loneliness. Now he’s my friend. Honestly, he keeps my feet on the ground. John knows how to be a friend to people.(that's John and I in the picture)<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RgnrJKLJFtI/AAAAAAAAABo/qmviS4wmkvg/s200/JK.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5046823400027789010" />

No, it’s not as sexy as working in Africa (which is equally as valid). But, I can’t get it out of my head that Jesus loves the homeless and friendless here in New Haven just the same. Sure, maybe they’ve made mistakes, but so have you and I. Certainly God views the people of the world as equally valuable, not necessarily validating every idea or action, but certainly valuing their lives. After all, we are the crown of His Creation.

So my “word” of the day is: “Do our actions equal our belief statements?” Just something to ponder. I understand taking action is a big deal. Action is a scary thing. Believing costs so much because it demands action to be of value. It seems we often wait for all the right pieces to come together before we move, but perhaps God calls us to risk with what we have, rather than what we don’t have. We can have confidence that God will meet us if we move on His behalf toward to the world around us. His perfect love casts out fear. So when we make space for God in our lives, we make space for the hurting and forgotten.

Much Love & Your Friend,
Dave

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RehYHKJfsoI/AAAAAAAAAAk/jY_r490clC4/s320/unknown-5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037373063220408962" />

Dear Family & Friends,
Welcome to 2007! My hope is that this year will bring many blessings & pleasant surprises for each one of you.
As most of you know, late last year I travelled back to Masoyi, South Africa to continue to pursue what I feel God has put in my heart concerning the AIDS & orphan crisis there and in the rest of southern Africa. It was an incredible time of revisiting a place where we have invested before. To see the progress and growth of Masoyi over the past 3 years, was incredible for me. From my first time there, seeing a dirt field transformed into full fledged care centers (which we built) – teaching, loving, and feeding hundred of kids every single day. Children, that would normally be extremely fortunate to have just one meal a day, much less have a safe environment in which to be cared for.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RehXZKJfslI/AAAAAAAAAAM/KxaKJtMh2lw/s320/unknown.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037372272946426450" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RehXZKJfsmI/AAAAAAAAAAU/iDd3BlMAUwI/s320/unknown-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037372272946426466" />
Perhaps even more meaningful for me was being able to walk thru the community and be recognized by many people, both young and old. This was very, very humbling for me to be recognized by these precious people - Royalty before God.

A STORY:
One particular experience I’d like to share is the story of 5 orphans who lost their home. Just a few days before I arrived, their home was burned to the ground. Tragically, the youngest brother was not able to escape the fire and died. When I landed the need was vary evident…we were compelled to do something tangible for these orphans! So we were able to raise the enough money to build them new home, pay for their school f ees, and furnish their new home. In addition we were able to connect them with local caregivers who will continue to nurture these beloved children.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_daCCCBCTLHE/RehZc6JfssI/AAAAAAAAABE/aDdiA9FWcrk/s320/unknown-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037374536394191554" />

WHAT’S AHEAD:
The future feels hopeful. Last year was we gained a lot of momentum with our initiatives in Southern Africa. This year we hope to focus on India, in addition to our work in South Africa. This year is full of possibilities now we must see what will land. We hope to jump aboard what God is already doing rather than hope that God chooses to bless what we want to do.

THANK YOU:
Just as Jesus gave the mandate to go into all the world, we are also given the mandate to care for the orphan and the widow. Thank you very much for investing in all your various ways to see the Love of Christ given to those who go without some the basic necessities of life. It is my great honor and pleasure to have all of you stand behind me in this.
